Pipe Coating

Occupying an area of 140,000 square meters, our new pipe coating facility in Mussafah enables us to offer a wide range of specialist pipe coating services.

NMDC Energy established its first pipeline coating plant in 1978 to support the company’s offshore pipe-laying operations. Since then, NMDC Energy has expanded its anti-corrosion pipeline coating capabilities with state-of-the-art plants dedicated to single fusion bonded epoxy (FBE), dual layer FBE and three layer polyethylene/polypropylene coating for onshore and concrete weight coating (CWC) for offshore pipeline. As part of development and work expansion in 2024, the internal pipeline coating has been established. Moving forward, to increase and accelerate the efficiency of offshore pipe laying, a new double jointing plant for CWC pipes will be established before the end of 2024.

In 2017, NMDC Energy relocated our pipe coating operations from the Musaffah yard to a new area positioned in the ICAD IV which occupies an area of 312,000 m² and expanded in 2024 to occupy a total area of 447,000 m² due to new big awarded projects.

NMDC Energy was the first company in the region to acquire the most advanced technology for onshore pipeline coating. In 1994, NMDC Energy installed the first plant for three layer coating with outer diameters of 3”– 52” inches. In response to growing demand for three-layer PE / PP coating, NMDC Energy, installed the second coating plant for pipes with outer diameters of 3”– 48” inches in 2014. Moreover, this plant also has been upgraded in 2023 to coat pipes with outer diameter up to 64” inches. The two plants are capable of coating single FBE layer, dual FBE layer and three-layer PE / PP coating.

NMDC Energy implemented fully automated processes for concrete weight coating (CWC) and internal pipe cleaning and coating. The fully automated CWC plant executes the coating process for pipes with outer diameters of 4” – 48” inches with a mix of iron ore, cement and water using steel wire mesh as reinforcement and curing compound for fast curing. The CWC plant includes facilities for sacrificial anode installation.

NMDC Energy have a fully automated internal liquid epoxy coating plant to process pipes ranging from 16” to 64” diameter. The plant can coat 300m2/hour with pipe length 8 m to 13.5 m with a wall thickness of 6.4 mm to 29.2 mm.

Our facilities include:

  • Coal-Tar Enamel anti-corrosion coating (CTE) plant processing pipes ranging from 4" to 48" in outer diameter.
  • Fusion Bonded Epoxy (FBE), Polyethylene (PE), Polypropylene (PP) plant processing coating for pipes ranging from 3" to 48" in outer diameter.
  • Concrete Weight Coating (CC) plant with facilities for anode installation.
  • Internal pipe cleaning machine with a shot / grit blasting process for pipes from 18" to 48" in diameter.
  • On-bottom stability calculators.
